How to find the best hotels in Washington DC
The capital is home to the largest hotel industry in the country, but it’s also a hotbed for sex workers.
While Washington DC hosts a thriving community of sex workers, its hotels have been largely left out of the limelight.
“The majority of hotels in DC are not open to the public,” says Amanda Fisch, an escort who’s been working in the city since 2015.
“They’re all private, all of them have separate bathrooms, so they don’t have the privacy and they’re all kind of hidden.”
As a result, Fisch says, most people who come to her in-room escorts feel like they’re just a step or two away from an escort.
“When you’re at a hotel, you’re just two doors away from a woman,” she says.
“So, if she’s not there, I don’t know if you’re going to have a relationship.”
In reality, a number of hotel workers have struggled to keep up with the surge in demand.
“We have a lot of people who don’t want to get in the room with a prostitute,” says Natasha Tuck, a manager for the popular Hotel New York, who’s also an escort in her spare time.
“It’s just so much work.
It’s hard to make a living.”
It’s not just sex workers who face challenges.
Some of the hotel industry’s most famous stars have been victims of violence or harassment in the past.
Earlier this year, actor Matthew Broderick announced he would not continue his current contract with the New York-based hotel chain Marriott after being attacked by two men in an elevator.
He later issued an apology for the incident, saying he wasn’t aware of the incident until he read the press release about the incident.
“I think people are just very aware of this issue,” he said at the time.
But, says Tuck: “There’s just no place for that kind of behavior in hotels.”
The problem isn’t limited to hotel workers.
As of 2015, Washington DC’s largest hotel chain, Hilton Hotels, had no vacancies in the first two months of the year, according to data from the agency that manages its tax revenue.
A spokesperson for Hilton Hotel Washington said that hotel managers are required to report vacancies to the government, but that the city is “not currently investigating any complaints about vacancies.”
In 2016, a woman working for the company claimed that she was harassed by another woman, who was eventually fired.
“She just wanted a job and it was hard to find a job,” the woman told WUSA9, an NBC affiliate in Washington, DC.
The woman, whose name was redacted from the report, said she was told she would have to work a night shift and would be paid only half the hourly wage she was due.
She also claimed that the company wouldn’t provide her with the phone number of her co-workers to reach them if she requested one.
In a statement to Business Insider, the hotel chain defended its practices.
“While there are some concerns raised about the current hiring practices at our hotel chains, our hotels operate a robust, transparent, and rigorous hiring process that includes rigorous background checks, and we fully support our employees and their rights to privacy and safety,” the statement read.
In 2016 alone, the number of sexual harassment cases reported to the hotel agency rose from 4,000 to 17,000, according an Associated Press report.
More recently, the Washington Post reported that one of the biggest hotel chains in the United States, Hyatt, had been caught violating federal anti-discrimination laws.
According to the AP, a Hyatt employee who said she had been sexually harassed by a male employee said she received a $200 settlement from the company.
Hyatt spokesperson Jason Henningsen told the AP that he could not comment on specific cases because the matter was under investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
In the Washington area, the sex industry is still relatively new to the city, but many of the hotels it operates have long been known for their low-income accommodations and low standards of living.
“Washington is a relatively young city, and the average household income is around $50,000,” Fisch tells Business Insider.
“And the average income of hotels is just over $150,000.
So, if you want to work, you have to pay your rent, you need to pay for food and your utilities.
So it’s a lot more expensive than you would imagine for a lot less than you are used to.”
But in the case of a worker who claims to be a victim of sexual assault or harassment, there’s no one in the business who can protect her from abuse.
“This woman didn’t have a place to go.
This woman had no friends or family to go to,” Fisch says.
And the problem goes beyond the hotel sector.
